Do you want to create a new iTunes library on Mac computer ?

Did you know that you can manage more than one iTunes Library on your Mac at the same time? Most Apple users are often pleasantly surprised by this revelation. You never know when you might need multiple iTunes Libraries on your Mac. So why exactly should you have more than one iTunes Library on your Mac?

Part 1. Open a different iTunes Library File or Create a New iTunes Library

If you have multiple iTunes libraries, it feels like as if there are two different computers with different iTunes accounts on them. Having different iTunes Libraries allows to separate each person’s movies, music and applications, and they won’t be added to each other unless you intentionally copy files to that library. This is extremely helpful, especially if the Mac you’re using is a family computer and more than one family member uses it.

This way, you can sync multiple Apple devices (iPod/ iPhone/ iPad) so that you do not access other people’s music accidentally. Through this, iTunes would manage different types of music differently, from the same set of files. Since it is still using the same set of files, it is easier to back up all of them, so you don’t have to worry about doing any tiresome task when backing up your music.

The size of your music folder, as seen in the Finder, and the size of your library, as seen in iTunes, will never perfectly match. For instance, iTunes shows my library as being 69.88 GB, but in the Finder my music folder, Mike’s iTunes, is 70.02 GB. The approximately 144 MB difference, which is small, can be attributed to the organized folder structure within my music folder.
A large discrepancy such as what you are experiencing can be the result of orphaned media files. That is, you have 40 GB of media files stored on your Mac’s hard drive(s), but only 20 GB worth are actually in your music folder. To resolve this now and in the future you need to do two things: merge your libraries and make sure any new content you add goes to your music folder.
To merge all of your media files into a single library you need to use iTunes library consolidation feature. If you are using iTunes 7 or earlier, then you go to Advanced > Consolidate Library; in iTunes 8 it is File > Library > Consolidate Library. Once your library is consolidated, all of your media files should be located in your music folder.
By default, any content you purchase from the iTunes Store or rip from CDs will be placed in your default (or designated) music folder. If you download media from other sources (e.g., Amazon.com, eMusic, etc.), it will be stored in the location to which your downloads are sent or you designate. If your library is split, then that would indicate that content you added to iTunes have been linked, thus iTunes know where the content resides and can access it, but is not stored in your music folder. To insure that any content that you add to your iTunes library is also placed in your music folder you must have the “Copy files…” option in the Advanced tab of iTunes’ preferences enabled.
